Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii’s Fractured Jaw Puts Lions Tour Participation in Doubt

Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii

Australian rugby sensation Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is facing a race against time to be fit for the upcoming British & Irish Lions series after sustaining a fractured jaw during a Super Rugby Pacific match. The 21-year-old Waratahs back suffered the injury in an accidental collision with teammate Andrew Kellaway during their 28-21 loss to the Queensland Reds on May 9. Initially diagnosed with a concussion, subsequent scans revealed a small, undisplaced fracture in his jaw, necessitating surgical intervention.

Suaalii is expected to be sidelined for at least four weeks, effectively ruling him out for the remainder of the Waratahs’ Super Rugby season. The team’s chances of making the playoffs are slim, with only three rounds remaining and a significant points deficit to overcome.

The timing of the injury is particularly concerning for the Wallabies, as Suaalii was anticipated to play a pivotal role in the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions, commencing on July 19 in Brisbane. His recovery timeline suggests he may be available for the Wallabies’ warm-up Test against Fiji on July 6, providing a potential opportunity to regain match fitness ahead of the Lions series.

Waratahs head coach Dan McKellar expressed support for Suaalii, stating, “This is unfortunate for us and especially for Joseph. We wish him all the best in his recovery and return to full health. We will do all we can to facilitate his recovery in consultation with Rugby Australia to have him in the best shape possible for his availability for the Wallabies.

Suaalii’s transition from rugby league to union has been closely watched, especially after his high-profile move from the Sydney Roosters in a deal reportedly worth AU$5.35 million. He made an immediate impact in his union debut, earning player-of-the-match honors in Australia’s victory over England in November 2024.

The Wallabies’ coaching staff, led by Joe Schmidt, will be monitoring Suaalii’s recovery closely, as his presence could be instrumental in countering the Lions’ formidable lineup. His potential absence adds to Australia’s injury concerns, with first-choice fly-half Noah Lolesio also nursing a back injury.
