Chicago, IL — In a heartbreaking incident on the night of June 5, Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera, 36, was fatally wounded by a gunshot fired by a fellow officer during a pursuit of a suspect in the city’s Chatham neighborhood.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Rivera and her partner were attempting to stop and question a man who fled on foot shortly before 10 p.m. As they pursued the suspect into a nearby residence, they were confronted by a second individual armed with a rifle. During the confrontation, Rivera’s partner discharged his weapon, unintentionally striking Rivera in the back.
Rivera, a four-year veteran of the force and a single mother to a 10-year-old daughter, was rushed to the hospital. However, during transport, the police vehicle experienced a mechanical failure that delayed her arrival. Despite efforts by medical staff, Rivera succumbed to her injuries.
Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “She was protecting lives and she was a hero who lost her life tragically doing the job she loved. She wanted to make Chicago a better and safer place.”
Both suspects involved in the incident were swiftly apprehended by law enforcement and are currently in custody as the investigation unfolds. In addition to the tragic loss of Officer Krystal Rivera, another officer sustained a wrist injury during the chaotic and tense altercation that took place inside the residence.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has formally launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have confirmed that no charges have been filed at this stage, as the inquiry remains active and ongoing. Investigators are meticulously reviewing body camera footage, conducting witness interviews, and analyzing forensic evidence to ensure a thorough understanding of the events that transpired.
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson offered his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, the Chicago Police Department, and the entire community. “Tonight, the entire city of Chicago grieves and mourns together over the tragic loss of one of our finest officers,” the Mayor said. “We will honor her young, energetic, and bold approach toward keeping us safe.
