New Ulster recruit Juarno Augustus has been named in South Africa’s 54-man squad for the opening four internationals of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old back row, who recently joined Ulster from Northampton Saints, is among nine uncapped players selected by head coach Rassie Erasmus.
Erasmus has retained 31 members of the Springboks’ 2023 Rugby World Cup-winning squad, while ushering in fresh talent ahead of a demanding international calendar.
Joining Augustus among the potential debutants are Scarlets hooker Marnus van der Merwe, Stormers prop Neethling Fouche, Lions prop Asenathi Ntlabakanye, flankers Renzo du Plessis and Vincent Tshituka, Bulls utility forward Cobus Wiese, Sharks centre Ethan Hooker, and Toyota Cheetahs backline star Ntokozo Makhaza.
The Springboks will begin their 2025 campaign with a clash against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28. This will be followed by back-to-back Tests against Italy in Pretoria (July 5) and Gqeberha (July 12), before they face Georgia in Nelspruit on July 19.
South Africa’s busy year also includes high-profile European tour matches in November against Italy, France, Ireland, and Wales.

“We are excited to have the luxury of announcing a squad with so much depth and talent,” said Erasmus. “Having an expanded squad will not only afford us the opportunity to have productive training sessions, but it will also benefit the younger players as they learn from experienced Rugby World Cup champions.”
The full squad includes top names like Siya Kolisi, Eben Etzebeth, Cheslin Kolbe, Handre Pollard, and Damian Willemse, blending veteran leadership with emerging stars in what promises to be a thrilling season for South African rugby.
